Papers of Zane Grey (1872-1939) including correspondence (1903-1939), material related to Grey's dental practice, partial manuscripts, and newspaper clippings Grey kept as research material for his novels and on the the filming of his novels; papers of Lina (Dolly) Elise Roth Grey (1883-1957) including correspondence (1901-1917), carbon copies of helpful hints type notes presumably sent to women's papers, and essays from her school years; financial records (1906-1939) consisting of cancelled checks, bank books, receipts, invoices, freight bills, contracts, and tax related documents, the bulk of which (1915-1918) pertain to Zane and Lina Grey's financies while they were living in their house in Lackawaxen, Pa.; collected materials related to the Grey family and various materials which cannot be linked with any certainty to a specific Grey family member and might have belonged to the James family including calling cards, Christmas cards, postcards, letters, menus, seating charts, and other ephemera; sheet music presumably owned by the Greys; photographs containing images of Zane Grey's family, his travels, and stills from the 1918 motion picture, Riders of the Purple Sage, together with images which cannot be linked to Zane Grey, are unidentified, or are more modern images of Grey's former residences; and oversized materials.

Zane Grey was born Pearl Zane Grey on January 31, 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio to Lewis Grey and Alice Josephine (Zane) Grey. He earned a degree in dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1896. From 1898 to 1904 he lived in New York City and had an unsuccessful dentistry practice. At this time he wrote his first book, Betty Zane, about his Ohio ancestors.
